Danish contemporary artist Martin Elsborg

Martin Elsborg (Born 1981) is a self-taught artist, from the most southern point in Denmark called Gedser. He grew up in the 80´s in a small, but tuff fisher environment. Back then it was not unusual for people to solve their problems by fighting. Hitting first! asking questions later, seem to be the way of doing things. It was a very self-destructive way of life and most of the “characters” from his childhood has passed away today, some by drowning in the sea, but most by drowning their sorrows in alcohol.

It was in this environment Martin never really felt like he was fitting in, but then in his teens he discovered the music scene in Seattle, the so called "grunge wave") The music and lyrics were typically dark, nihilistic, angst-filled and anguished, often addressing themes such as social alienation, apathy, concerns about confinement, and a desire for freedom, all things martin could relate to.

It´s in this light you must see his work. His works are raw and consists often, only of a few different materials, like spray paint, oil and raw canvas, just like in a grunge band, with a guitar, bass and drums. Just the basic, no need to make it complicated.

He is applying the paint in a fast and direct way, no questions asked! Every line is painted very determinedly and without no sketch, like a wild river going down stream. This leads to errors and mistakes, but they are welcomed and seen as an important part of the process and the final work. The works are not perfect in anyway, but indeed very natural and human.

Martins works are powerful and beautiful at the same time. They are about the past, the present, darkness and light, good and evil, life and death. But mostly and most important they are just fucking paintings, what you see is what you get, no fucking bullshit. In other words, they can be anything you would like them to be.
